SUMMER CAMP 2019

Roll into a ceramic summer with us!

Our summer camps at ClaySpaceTC are designed for children ages 6 through 12, and each camp session runs for four consecutive days (Monday-Thursday) from 9 am-11:30 am. We won’t be eating or snacking during the clay camps, but we do encourage campers to bring a water bottle (and wear clothes that can get messy!).

Hand building Camps are for ages 6 through 12, and Wheel throwing Camps are for ages 9 through 12. You may register for as many camps as you’d like. While the structure and instruction will be similar from camp to camp, we always welcome returning campers, and we’re always excited to introduce new projects for each camp session!

More about our clay camp techniques:

Hand building is working with clay by hand using only simple tools, not the pottery wheel. This is the original way of creating pottery! Before potters had the pottery wheel, they were creating amazing pots and other items with clay, using just their hands, fingers, and basic tools. In these camps, we will explore techniques like slabbing, scoring, pinching, coiling, and more.
Wheel throwing is working with clay on a pottery wheel, which is a machine used for creating round ceramic ware. “Throwing” comes from the Old English word thrawan, which means twisting, turning, and propelling. In these camps, we’ll use our hands, arms, and core strength to control the clay on the wheel as we work on creating symmetrical clay pieces.
